• Anything to a blacklisted address (companies selling to spammers) goes to /dev/null.
• Anything from a whitelisted address (friends/family/etc.) or from a whitelisted domain (bank/mortgage company/etc.) goes directly to my inbox.
• Anything to a whitelisted address (the ones I give out) goes directly to my inbox.
• Anything to an address I have not given out goes to /dev/null.
• Anything not matching above that is marked by spam assassin as spam goes to /dev/null.
• Anything left after all this goes to a special "unknown sender" folder.

The "unknown sender" folder gets 3-5 emails a week, and it is 90% spam. My inbox gets no spam at all.

The system took a bit to set up, and takes a small bit of effort to maintain, but it really does eliminate virtually all spam.

I periodically check what is going to /dev/null. It's 100% spam, and Spam Assassin misses about 30% of it.

At work I don't have as much control. Thunderbird is all I have to filter, and it is complete and utter shit. Near worthless.
